Reducing Trade Me Member debt

What is Trade Me?

Trade Me is New Zealand's leading auction and classifieds site; think Gumtree, eBay, or Vinted. Trade Me has over 5 million active users, across New Zealand and Australia. For comparison, New Zealand has a population of 5million!

Project Overview

As part of the payments team at Trade Me, I contributed to streamlining the payment process for our members, Particularly in areas for onsite member debt. This involved updating an unutilized feature that, when activated, would allow members to have their onsite member debt automatically paid off from their chosen bank account.

My role encumbered creating a refined process for our members to set up an automated payment to clear their onsite debt. Improving their workflow and reducing cognitive load and hassle.

In collaboration with my team, I dove deep into analysing the existing "Autobiller" feature to piece together the pain points of the member's journey. This allowed me to consider and test various edge cases of the member payment workflows and integral functionalities of Trade Me. Through my analysis, I saw the massive value this feature could provide our members if they choose to activate it. This feature allows for a more streamlined workflow and reduces the stress of manually paying off onsite debt. My design outcomes for this project were an informational banner that communicates the feature value and a frictionless toggle button to activate this 'Autobiller" feature. After much testing and deliberation, we also relocated the feature entry point. This allowed for a more intuitive feature onboarding experience. This resulted in a 200% activation of the “Autobiller” feature for both professional and casual sellers!

My team and I worked collaboratively within an iterative and adaptive process. We experimented with early low-fi designs with a select group of Trade Me Members. From there, we refined our designs and thought over the constructive feedback and analysis that we received. All to build an intuitive and helpful feature for members to reduce their time thinking about their debts.

After receiving very positive and satisfactory results in the final stages of testing with 15% of our Casual Trade Me members, this work is live on the Trade Me site for all our members who don't have the "Autobiller" feature turned on.
